Jakarta, August 6, 2025 — PLN Nusantara Power, the largest power generation subholding in Southeast Asia, continues to demonstrate its strong commitment to environmental sustainability through responsible and sustainable business operations. In the first half of 2025, the Company successfully produced 472.2 GWh of clean energy, equivalent to a reduction of approximately 525 thousand tons of CO? emissions, resulting from the implementation of co-firing innovation at 25 coal-fired power plants (PLTU).
President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, Ruly Firmansyah, emphasized that the Company’s commitment to supporting the achievement of Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060 remains a top priority. This commitment is pursued not only through the development of renewable energy-based power plants, but also by adopting effective strategies to accelerate the deployment of clean energy at existing coal-fired facilities.
“We have conducted studies on co-firing technology since 2018, and today we have implemented co-firing at 25 PLTUs across Java and outside Java. Several PLTUs outside Java have even achieved 100% co-firing levels,” said Ruly.
This co-firing innovation represents a strategic step toward cleaner energy while serving as part of PLN’s “green booster” program to achieve the national renewable energy mix target. Co-firing is considered a fast and effective solution for reducing carbon emissions and increasing the contribution of green energy without the need to build new power plants.
Co-firing is a substitution technique in coal-fired power generation, whereby a portion of coal fuel is replaced with biomass, helping to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
“In addition to lowering emissions, co-firing also has the potential to address waste management challenges and promote a circular economy, as one of the fuel sources can be derived from Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF),” Ruly explained.
PLN Nusantara Power has also established partnerships with four Japanese companies—Toshiba, Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and IHI Corporation—to develop clean energy solutions at power generation units through various technologies, including biomass processing plants, ammonia co-firing, Air Quality Control Systems (AQCS), and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS).
