Jakarta, April 30, 2026 - PT PLN Nusantara Power’s (PLN NP) efforts to deliver cleaner energy continue to show positive results. Through its biomass co-firing program at coal-fired power plants, PLN NP successfully generated 245 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) of green energy throughout the first quarter of 2026. This achievement surpassed the set target by 14.7 percent.
The biomass co-firing program serves as one of PLN NP’s key strategies to support the national energy transition. By utilizing biomass as a fuel mix at coal-fired power plants (PLTU), the company can curb carbon emissions while maintaining a reliable electricity supply for the public.
Throughout 2025, PLN NP’s biomass co-firing operated commercially across 25 coal-fired power plants. From this program, PLN NP successfully produced 1,041 GWh of green energy and recorded a carbon emission reduction of 1.17 million tons of CO2e. This positive trend persisted into the first quarter of 2026 with the production of 245 GWh of green energy, contributing to a carbon emission reduction of 286 thousand tons of CO2e.
President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, Ruly Firmansyah, stated that biomass co-firing is a realistic energy transition solution because it can be implemented progressively across existing power plants.
“Biomass co-firing is a tangible form of PLN Nusantara Power’s commitment to supporting the national energy transition. We are optimizing our existing generation assets to produce cleaner, highly reliable, and sustainable energy,” Ruly said.
According to Ruly, the success of co-firing across 25 power plants demonstrates that concrete steps can be taken toward low-emission power generation. This transformation not only impacts emission reduction but also unlocks new economic opportunities through the development of biomass ecosystems in various regions.
The co-firing program also promotes the utilization of local resources, strengthens the biomass supply chain, and creates added value for local communities and business players around the plant's operational areas.
“Green energy production from co-firing continues to see positive growth. In 2025, green energy production rose by 21.9 percent compared to the previous year. This year, PLN NP has once again booked a strong start with a production of 245 GWh in the first quarter,” Ruly added.
PLN Nusantara Power will continue to strengthen innovations in low-emission power generation and expand its energy transition initiatives. This milestone forms part of the company's contribution toward supporting the achievement of Indonesia's Net Zero Emissions target.
