Bogor, July 17, 2025 — PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP) has reaffirmed its strategic role in the electricity system of Nias Island by fully assuming the management of the 25 MW Nias Gas Engine Power Plant (PLTMG Nias). The handover of operations and maintenance (O&M) management from PT Tripatra Engineers and Constructors and PT PLN Indonesia Power Services (IPS) was conducted on Thursday (July 17) in Bogor, marking that PLTMG Nias is now entirely under the responsibility of PLN NP.
Previously, as of January 1, 2023, the PLTMG Nias asset had officially been transferred to PLN NP following the PLN Holding–Subholding transformation. However, O&M activities continued to be carried out by Tripatra and IPS until the official handover to PLN NP’s subsidiary, PLN Nusantara Power Services (NPS).
President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, Ruly Firmansyah, welcomed the assignment of NPS in ensuring the reliability of electricity supply in the Nias region, which is highly dependent on this power plant.
“PLTMG Nias is the backbone of the electricity system on Nias Island. Through this management transition, we reaffirm PLN NP’s commitment to delivering reliability, efficiency, and the best possible service for the people of Nias,” said Ruly Firmansyah.
This step is further reinforced by the readiness of PLN NP’s technical teams to address the challenges of power generation in island regions. Director of Gas Power Plant Operations at PLN NP, Komang Parmita, emphasized the importance of a structured and sustainable transition process.
“This handover is not merely a transfer of management, but also a process of learning and deepening system knowledge. We are confident that NPS can continue the high-performance legacy of PLTMG Nias, especially given the complex operational challenges of this plant, including the specific characteristics of MAN engines,” Komang explained.
President Director of PLN Nusantara Power Services (NPS), Jakfar Sadiq, expressed optimism with the addition of Nias as the company’s 15th managed location.
“With Nias, we now manage 55 PLTMG units across 15 locations. We are currently completing the installation of a PLTMG simulator, which will serve as a training platform to enhance operator competency. Our goal is to sustain the high Equivalent Availability Factor (EAF) and operational efficiency previously achieved by Tripatra and IPS,” Jakfar stated.
Over the past six years, PLTMG Nias has contributed more than 60% of the electricity supply for the Nias power system. Constructed in 2017 and fully operational since 2019, the plant has recorded an EAF above 92%, making it a vital component in maintaining power reliability in western Sumatra.
The handover also served as a moment of appreciation for the previous partners. Director of Asset Solution at PT Tripatra, Suraji Nugroho, conveyed his gratitude for the support of all parties throughout the contract period.
“Nias was our first power plant project and stands as a testament to our commitment to delivering reliable electricity in remote areas. We thank PLN NP and all teams involved for the strong collaboration, and we hope future partnerships will continue,” said Suraji.
With the Nias power system’s peak load reaching 40.7 MW and an available capacity of 70.5 MW, PLTMG Nias plays a strategic role in supporting system stability and economic growth on Nias Island. Through NPS, PLN Nusantara Power is ready to carry forward the positive legacy of previous operators while driving transformation toward a more modern and resilient power generation system. (*)
