Bekasi, August 13, 2026 – Ahead of the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia, PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP) officially inaugurated the Hydrogen Refueling Station (HRS) Merah Putih 3.0 at the Muara Tawar Generation Unit (UP Muara Tawar) in Bekasi, West Java, on Thursday (August 13). Developed internally by PLN NP, the facility has a Domestic Component Level (TKDN) of more than 70 percent, covering a range of equipment, installation works, and services.
The inauguration was attended by Director of New Energy at the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE), Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ir. Senda Hurmuzan Kanam, M.Sc.; Executive Vice President of Energy Transition and Sustainability at PT PLN (Persero), Kamia Handayani; President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, Ruly Firmansyah; as well as members of management and relevant stakeholders.
President Director of PLN Nusantara Power Ruly Firmansyah said the development of HRS Merah Putih is part of PLN NP’s efforts to strengthen its mastery of hydrogen technology while enhancing the capabilities of Indonesia’s human resources.
“Today, we are not simply launching a hydrogen refueling facility. We are laying an important foundation for the development of a new energy ecosystem in Indonesia. The name Merah Putih represents the spirit of self-reliance and national pride—the determination to master technology, build capabilities, and deliver energy solutions developed and operated by the nation’s best talents,” Ruly said.
The Muara Tawar HRS is the third generation of the HRS Merah Putih series, following HRS Merah Putih 1.0 in Muara Karang in 2024 and HRS Merah Putih 2.0 in Rembang in 2025. PLN NP has also developed a Mobile HRS, which can be relocated according to operational needs.
The HRS Merah Putih 3.0 Muara Tawar facility is integrated with a Green Hydrogen Plant, supported by solar power generation and certified renewable energy. The facility is designed to produce approximately 7.9 tons of hydrogen per year, with part of the production utilized for the power plant’s internal needs and the surplus available for energy applications beyond the power generation sector.
Muara Tawar was selected due to its strategic position as one of PLN NP’s major power generation facilities, with an installed capacity of 2,725 MW. The ecosystem developed at the site enables renewable energy to be converted into hydrogen, which can then be stored, compressed, and utilized for transportation or converted back into electricity through fuel cell technology.
“Through this ecosystem, we want to demonstrate that hydrogen is not merely an energy commodity of the future. Hydrogen can serve as a bridge connecting clean energy generation, energy storage, electricity supply, and low-emission mobility,” Ruly said.
Director of New Energy at the Directorate General of EBTKE, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ir. Senda Hurmuzan Kanam, M.Sc., welcomed the development of HRS Merah Putih Muara Tawar as a concrete step toward strengthening Indonesia’s national hydrogen ecosystem. He said hydrogen development must advance not only from a technological perspective, but also through industrial readiness, infrastructure, utilization, and market development.
“The development of HRS Merah Putih Muara Tawar shows that Indonesia’s hydrogen ecosystem is beginning to move from the technology development stage toward implementation. Initiatives like this are important for building practical experience, strengthening domestic capabilities, and opening opportunities for hydrogen utilization across various sectors,” Senda said.
The development of HRS Merah Putih forms part of PLN NP’s roadmap to establish an integrated hydrogen ecosystem, covering green hydrogen production, refueling infrastructure, hydrogen-powered vehicles, and the use of hydrogen for electricity generation. PLN NP has previously developed eight Green Hydrogen Plants, along with various hydrogen utilization technologies.
The inauguration was marked by a hydrogen refueling simulation from HRS Merah Putih Muara Tawar to a hydrogen-powered vehicle, the flag-off of a hydrogen-electric vehicle road test, and a site visit. The event continued with a talk show discussing the development of the hydrogen ecosystem and clean transportation.
Through HRS Merah Putih Muara Tawar, PLN NP continues to advance technological capabilities, increase domestic content, and strengthen cross-sector collaboration to accelerate the development of Indonesia’s national hydrogen ecosystem and support the achievement of Net Zero Emissions by 2060.(*)
