Jakarta, June 30, 2026 – Along the pristine shores of Serang Beach in Blitar, East Java, the sight of tiny hatchlings crawling toward the ocean is a moment the volunteers of the Segoro Lestari Turtle Conservation group cherish deeply. To these conservationists, every single hatchling that makes it back to the sea is a symbol of hope for the future of Indonesia’s marine ecosystem.
Protecting this hope, however, is a formidable challenge. Habitat loss, predators, climate change, and human activity continue to threaten sea turtle populations each nesting season. Recognizing this, PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP), through its Brantas Generation Unit (UP Brantas), has stepped up to provide essential support to the Segoro Lestari conservation area in Serang Village.
Since August 2024, through its Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program, PLN NP has funded the construction of critical infrastructure, including conservation area fencing, turtle egg incubation tanks, hatchling quarantine pools, educational grandstands, and a shelter. The support also extends to educational tools—such as projectors, sound systems, and mobile devices—and community empowerment training, including ecobatik workshops.
On June 22, PLN NP UP Brantas officially handed over a new set of upgraded facilities to the conservation group. These improvements include the revitalization of the conservation area, new egg incubation tanks, and high-quality audio equipment to enhance public education and visitor engagement.
For the volunteers, these facility upgrades are vital. In recent years, the number of rescued turtle eggs has steadily increased, stretching the previous incubation capacity to its limits. The new tanks are expected to significantly boost hatching success rates and ensure more hatchlings return safely to the wild.
Ruly Firmansyah, President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, emphasized that sea turtle conservation is a tangible demonstration of the company’s dedication to environmental sustainability and biodiversity.
"Every hatchling that successfully returns to the sea carries hope for the resilience of our coastal ecosystems," said Firmansyah. "PLN Nusantara Power aims to be more than just an energy provider; we strive to be part of the solution in safeguarding our environment. By collaborating with local communities, we ensure that Indonesia’s natural heritage is preserved for generations to come."
This commitment resonates deeply with the local volunteers who monitor nests and educate visitors daily. Sardi, Chairman of the Segoro Lestari conservation group, expressed his gratitude, noting that the support provides renewed energy for their mission. "This assistance is incredibly helpful as we navigate the current nesting season," he said.
Impron Rosadi, the group's Public Relations officer, highlighted the importance of the new audio equipment for their educational outreach. "We receive hundreds of students, researchers, and tourists every year. The new audio system helps us deliver our conservation message much more effectively, fostering a deeper understanding of why protecting sea turtles and coastal ecosystems is a shared responsibility," he explained.
This conservation spirit was also on full display during a recent "Turtle Talk" and hatchling release event, which combined practical conservation with public education on the vital role turtles play in maintaining marine health.
PLN Nusantara Power’s dedication to sea turtle conservation is a long-standing effort. Since 2016, the company has consistently supported similar programs at Pantai Taman, Pantai Kili-Kili, and Pantai Pancer through its Pacitan Generation Unit, working alongside various local community groups.
Through these sustained collaborations, PLN Nusantara Power hopes to inspire a new generation of environmental stewards. Protecting sea turtles is more than just saving a species—it is about preserving the delicate balance of our oceans and securing a healthier natural legacy for Indonesia.
